About this bursary

NSFAS is South Africa's main government funding scheme for students from financially needy households, covering tuition, accommodation and living allowances at public universities and TVET colleges.

It's the largest single source of student funding in the country, and most first-time applicants for state financial aid start here. Funding is means-tested, meaning household income is the primary factor in whether a student qualifies, rather than the field they choose to study.

Because NSFAS funds such a large share of South Africa's student population, its application cycle, appeals process and disbursement system have a direct effect on whether many students can register at all each year — it's worth applying as early as the cycle opens rather than waiting.
