About this bursary
Funza Lushaka is the Department of Basic Education's bursary for students training to become teachers, with priority given to scarce-skill subjects like mathematics, science and African languages.
In return for funding, recipients commit to teaching at a public school for a number of years equal to the years they were funded — a service-back model shared with several other government bursaries.
The bursary covers a full Bachelor of Education or PGCE qualification, and the Department of Basic Education places funded graduates through a formal placement process rather than leaving job-hunting entirely up to the student.
